EXHAUST PIPE
Under the rear bumper of cars there is a pipe that puts out smoke. The engine that produces this smoke is usually in the front of the car. The exhaust pipe runs all the way from the front of the car to the rear. Before the smoke comes out into the air, pollution has to be removed. Cars built since the 70's have catalytic converters somewhere along the exhaust pipe. These change poisonous carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide which is not harmful to people. Inspection stations make sure this equipment is working.
WITH ADULT ASSISTANCE: Making sure the engine is off and the brakes are set, look under a car and try to find the parts shown in the diagram. CAUTION: Dont touch exhaust sustem parts. If the engine has been running, these parts will be hot.
