The power plant in the photo is in Tucson, Arizona. The long building with the tall windows houses four machines, called generators, which make electricity. Each can produce from 90 to 156 megawatts of power. A megawatt is one million watts of power, enough to light at least ten thousand light bulbs at the same time.

Four boiler towers rise behind the generator room. Each one supplies steam to a turbine that spins one of the four generators. A water storage tank and the smokestack are further back. In front of the generator room is the switchyard. Here transformers boost the electricity to be sent out over the transmission lines, which are held up by the steel towers.
